Prince Honored By Recording Academy

Last night, the Grammy saluted the Purple One with star studded performances on CBS.  Hosted by SNL alum and daughter of songstress Minnie Riperton ; Maya Rudolph,  the  Pre-recorded tribute aired after the 2020 Grammy Awards back in January. The set-list consisted of many of his notable hits specifically from the Controversy-Sign of The Times era.  Die hard Prince fans would have wanted more B-Sides added to the set, but I digress. Standout performances include,  H.E.R, former band mate/ Sheila E , Common, Foo Fighters, Usher, Miguel ,The Revolution, Earth, Wind & Fire and his proteges turned rival band, Morris Day & The Time. Sheila E and production duo. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis served as musical directors of the program.

The show closed out  with his magnum opus; Purple Rain.   This soul bearing rendition was performed by none other than Mavis Staples of The Staple Singers and The Revolution respectfully.

If you’re a hardcore member of the Purple Army, you probably would’ve hope they would’ve included 3x Grammy winner D’Angelo covering “She’s Always In My Hair”. However,   if you’re just getting acquainted to the genius of Prince this special was it.
